It has gone down in the history of beach volleyball that in 1920, the first volleyball courts were set up on a beach. By 1930, the first two-man games of beach volleyball were being played in Santa Monica and the sport began to gain international appeal with games recorded in Bulgaria, France, Latvia and even the Czech Republic.
The Duke surfed, played beach volleyball and was a lifeguard when he relocated from his native Hawaiian islands and the Outrigger Canoe Club to become a beach guard at the Santa Monica Beach Club. Beach volleyball soon graduated from a six pack of beer for first prize, into real cash.
Beach volleyball was probably first played in Hawaii in 1915, when the Outrigger Beach and Canoe Club set up a court on Waikiki Beach. Most people though believe that it begun in Santa Monica, California, in the 1920s, about 25 years after the indoor version of the game was invented on the other side of the USA in Massachusetts.
